Although Alpina has the status of an independent carmaker, all its models are modified BMW cars. However, some Bavarians are ignored by the company. For example, electrified cars are not planned to be offered in the near future.

Alpina thus wants to stay with internal combustion engines as long as possible. The reason is relatively simple: according to the head of the carmaker, customers simply do not want Alpina electric cars. And this applies to both electric cars and hybrids.
Alpin owners use cars often, they run longer routes and travel a lot on highways. In Germany, for example, the owners can easily shoot 30 to 50,000 kilometers a year on the highway alone. And because much of the German motorway network has so far avoided speed limits, Alpin drivers also like to swallow these kilometers at the highest possible pace.
And it is the brisk highway shifts that are a discipline for which electrified vehicles are generally not suitable. Customers know this, so they simply do not want a car of this type from Alpina.

However, this does not mean that the German carmaker will stay with internal combustion engines forever. Given developments in the field of powertrains, this would not even be possible.
But as long as it works, Alpina is said to be offering the cars its customers want, even with limited financial resources. In the near future, therefore, the drive, which is still considered marginal, will not be devoted to.
Interestingly, in the recent past, Alpina wanted to sell one modified BMW with electrified drive. It was developing its own version of the plug-in hybrid i8 sports car, which it even equipped with a four-cylinder instead of a 1.5-liter three-cylinder, thus achieving the highest combined power of around 460 horsepower. The whole project got to the phase of in-service testing, but was terminated due to many problems.
