During the last race weekend in Japan, a number of questions arose after the announcement of next season’s AlphaTauri team. Liam Lawson is the big missing driver, after which there were whispers in the paddock that he has been promised a seat for 2025. However, Christian Horner knows nothing about those rumors.
Towards the following season, there were still three places available on the grid, but there were mainly question marks surrounding the future of AlphaTauri. Lawson has been given the opportunity to step in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo from Zandvoort and the New Zealander has shown for the time being that he is an excellent driver. During the Singapore Grand Prix – on one of the most difficult circuits of the year – Lawson even took an excellent ninth place, increasing the demand for him for next season. However, AlphaTauri makes its own plans and opts for Tsunoda and Ricciardo again.

Mysterious deal
The choice caused a lot of surprise in and outside the paddock, as the decision means that the talented Lawson will not make any progress in Formula 1 in 2024. Instead of a role in the main squad of Red Bull or AlphaTauri, the New Zealander will have to make do with his old role as a test and reserve driver. However, rumors from the paddock in Japan also revealed that this construction was agreed upon with Lawson and that he was promised a seat on the grid for 2025 in exchange for a year on the sidelines.
Horner denies rumors
In an extensive interview by Horner with Sky Sports, the future of Red Bull and AlphaTauri is discussed and the alleged ‘secret deal’ is therefore also on the table. Horner categorically denies it. “There are no guarantees in life,” he says firmly about the alleged promises. “He has done well and has certainly impressed us. He has done exactly what we asked of him by seizing the opportunity during Daniel’s absence, showing his qualities.
