Alonso was able to test the Aston Martin AMR22 race car as part of the Pirelli tire test on Tuesday, as the Spanish driver still has a valid contract Alpine to your team, The car rolled around the track with no sponsor stickers. Two-time Formula 1 world champion finally got to 97 rpm, before handing the wheel to teammate Lance Stroll. Alonso expressed his satisfaction after the test and also said he was “pleasantly disappointed with everything”.
“This year’s car is nowhere near the one we’ll be racing next year,” said the two-time world champion. “Aston Martin had a very strong weekend here. Sebastian [Vettel] he finished ahead of me in qualifying, so I don’t think there was a huge difference between Aston Martin and Alpine this weekend.”
“Actually, I’ve heard it myself, I’ve come across a very competitive car. Both Aston Martins finished in the points, so it was a good car to start with.”
When asked who are you just as optimistic now?as before being able to test his new team’s car, Alonso replied: “No, now I’m much more optimistic”.
“When I signed for Aston Martin, I was 90% happy. When they started to improve and finished the season in good shape, I was 100%. So this morning I was 100% satisfied and now more than 100%!”
Alonso has had a difficult season with Alpine this year: abandoned six times due to technical problems, and ultimately finished behind his teammate Esteban Ocon in the overall points race. Used by Aston Martin Mercedes– however, he is very pleased with the engine performance.
“When they told me yesterday evening how many kilometers the bike had, I was worried because I thought it was a little higher than what I’m used to” explained the Spaniard. “But we did 97 laps without any problems, which is definitely great.”
