Alone again in the Budapest cauldron

“They should make a movie about him.” Such suggestions also appeared in discussions or on social networks under articles about the most famous fan of Slovan Bratislava. Yes, we are talking about Dan Antošík, who has been “jumping” out of almost every media outlet in recent days. Unsurprisingly, the double-header of the second qualifying round of the Champions League between the Whites and Ferencváros was a breeding ground for reminiscing about the events of thirty years ago.

Legendary Slovan fan DANO ANTOŠÍK enjoyed the crowds heading to Tehelné pole

What kind of movie would it be? In its first part, the production would need a lot of extras. To depict realistically what happened on September 16 at Tehelno polí. Verbal as well as physical clashes between home and away fans and a hard hit by the cheerleaders was what was talked about more than the 4:1 result for Slovan. Two weeks later, the Hungarians wanted to take revenge for the humiliation.

They did not succeed on the field (0:0) and they had no opponent in the audience. Well, one yes. And the film would be about him. On the screen, we would watch a fifteen-year-old boy with a shaved head hang a blue-white flag on the fence post with a deafening screech and do nothing about the hatred around him.

Who knows if such a film would be a box office hit, probably yes in Slovakia. And maybe it deserves a sequel. After all, the topics for the “double” are also endless. “When there was a possibility that the Whites could play against Ferencváros again after thirty years, people from Ultras Slovan contacted me through the social network. That if I came,” the main character Dano Antošík begins to speak.

A man who has not lived under the Tatras for almost twenty years. He found his new home in Argentina. In the house in the countryside, he also has an old computer with a not always reliable network. “I watched the rematch in Batumi on it. During the scoreless state, my internet “fell” for the first time. When he came to his senses, we were already losing. Then it didn’t work for me again, but when it jumped, I shouted with joy at the top of my lungs to the whole village.”

Slovan won 2:1 in extra time, so Dano could go on a long trip. He had the tickets, which were arranged for him by ŠK supporters. He also packed a flag and a jersey. But he did not travel with them to Slovakia. Actually, he hardly traveled at all.

“I flew to Chile from Córdoba. In Santiago, I had to change to a connection to Atlanta. He had… It was found that I didn’t have a properly completed transit visa, so they didn’t want to let me go anywhere. In the end, they allowed me to fill it out again for a fee of about twenty dollars, but I don’t have a bank card, I don’t have an account, and I didn’t really have any money. And who will set you up just like that? In the end, after all, two ‘guys’ helped me, but the plane was already long gone.” says Dano.

He was offered another flight. It sounds unbelievable, but he would travel in ten days… “And that was not all. As I was running around the airport with my passport in my hand, I left the bag in which I had all my things thrown somewhere. I couldn’t find her anymore. Paradoxically, that saved me. The airline people felt desperately sorry. Delta and Air France somehow put it together and I was able to fly to Paris the next day.” says Dano Antošík, who was so cold at the airport in the Andes, wearing only a light jacket, that he wanted to sleep in the police station located in the building.

“I never said I’d beg to hang my head in a cell…”

He moved from the capital of France to Milan. From there, Ultras fans had to buy him another ticket to Vienna for 140 euros. The one he had had already fallen due to the slippage of time.

“I greatly appreciate what the guys did for me. The whole thing cost about two thousand euros. They cost ten or twenty euros each. People, many of whom may not even have heard of me until then. After all, many of them were not even born thirty years ago, or were two or four years old. I felt a responsibility towards them. If I were to pay for it, I might turn around in Santiago and return to Argentina. But I didn’t want to disappoint them.’

Coming to the “Slovak suburb” in Schwechat was pompous for him. He had a taxi ready to take him to a hotel in Bratislava, where a late dinner was waiting for him. “I felt like a star,” says Antošík, who after a 72-hour journey could say that he made it. After all, he was leaving for Budapest the very next day.

Youth – foolishness. With today’s mind, I probably wouldn’t do it anymore,” admits openly about his decision thirty years ago. Now it was different. Five hundred Slovan supporters traveled to the metropolis of our southern neighbors. And yet Dano was alone in the cauldron again.

“The original idea was that when we arrive in front of the stadium, I will be the only one to enter the sector. Only then will the others come. But the police did not allow us to do so. So it was done the other way around. They all left the sector at one point. Well, up to me. The squeal that the Ferencváros supporters started was comparable to that of thirty years ago. I enjoyed it.’

While in 1992 Antošík left Budapest with promotion in his “pocket”, now his Slovan only had a step towards him after a 2:1 victory. We all know how that turned out… “After the 1:4 loss, I was in tears. I am sorry not only for the result, but also for the game that our footballers played.” He could at least be happy that even before the rematch itself, twenty thousand fans applauded him on the Tehelno polí, he received a jersey with number 30 from the Slovan management with the inscription “Dano” on the back, and the jersey in which he played in Budapest was also given to him by Vlado Weiss.

“When I was coming to the center circle, I was really nervous. They told me not to drink any alcohol until then, but I still had to have some beer for my guts.” he admits and adds one more experience that pleased him despite the merciless loss of his beloved club: “When we arrived at the stadium, crowds of Slovan supporters were passing through the streets. It reminded me of when I was young. It was a normal sight back then. Unfortunately, we live in a different time today and I really don’t know when Bratislava will have a full house again.”

Dano Antošík is returning to Argentina tomorrow. The journey will take him 72 hours again. But he has no regrets, because in less than two weeks he saw “his” Slovan in action as many as four times, as he was also at the matches against Trenčín and Michalovci. At home in South America, he will talk about this, but also about many experiences, to his friends from the village. They had no idea that they had a fan legend Slovan as a neighbor. And thanks to social networks, even before they welcome their returnee, they already know. And maybe one day they will see a movie about him…

EXPERT IN GOULASH

Dano Antošík is a trained chef-waiter. For three years he earned his living in Spain, where he learned the language. Subsequently, he was lured by South America. He settled in Argentina in a village with 2,500 inhabitants, which is 40 kilometers from Córdoba, which has a population of one and a half million. What does he do for a living?

“I am a householder. I had a pub for ten years, which I would like to restore again. I have a garden, I keep chickens. Once a month I cook a beef goulash that the locals like and sell it. They also invite me to parties or celebrations, where I cook for the guests. In addition, I have a so-called ‘ping pong club’. It’s a kind of camouflage. Table tennis is played, but I also sell food and drinks. Yes, it’s in the black, but that’s how it works in Argentina, where inflation is high. You only get a receipt for your purchase in the center, but if you don’t want it, it’s twenty percent cheaper… That’s also why I can make ends meet there for one hundred and fifty euros.” says Dano Antošík.
