Almyth: Latvian Stoner Rock Band Makes Waves with Unique Sound and Debut Album

Although rock and metal, as well as “sludge” make up a very significant proportion of the world’s heavy music map, they are listened to here – as evidenced by the well-attended concerts of foreign bands – but they are not played in practice. The exception is the group “Four Minute Man” (they need to clarify the composition), the smoky metal “Zintnieku” could also be added to this branch, but nothing else quickly comes to mind. For this reason, a very pleasant surprise was the performance of “Almyth” submitted for the Latvian Metal Music of the Year Award, which some “stoner rock” connoisseurs appreciated with the laconic “is mega good”.

Nothing had been heard about such a brigade until now, so we had to turn to the creators of the project themselves. “Almyth” was formed in 2021 as a one-man studio project, but after recording the debut EP “Burnt Mountains” (released in February 2022), the project was put on hold until 2023 when we found a new line-up,” explains “Almyth ” leader, vocalist/guitarist Andre Tyron II, who also worked on the bass, samples and other elements of the composition on this record. The other two – bassist Walt and drummer Raitis, also Headless Horse-Rider.

The full-length album, released at the beginning of December last year, has only five tracks, but they are seven minutes long on average.

Psychedelic “stoner rock”, untamed and unpolished in sound, as it should be. Andre Tyron says that it was decided to add a more unusual sound to the classic “doom/stoner” rhythms, such as elements of jazz, classical music and even Hindu/Arabic folk music, so the result was different from the usual “stoners”. This (about the influence of Hindu/Arabic music) also explains why some songs have such peculiar titles – ‘Mahasamādhi’, ‘Nashwa’ and ‘Turiya And Ramakrishna’. True, it also raises suspicions about the content message of the compositions, but fortunately, it cannot be understood either…

If someone wants to test “Almyth”, then the songs “I, The Crusader” and “Brahman” can be especially recommended (they are in the reverse order on the album), “Mahasamādhi” is also elegant (it is stretched for more than ten minutes), but it is better to listen to the whole work from beginning to end – the vein-twisting “feeling” is guaranteed! It should be noted that the cellist Erna Daugaviete also participated in the recording of one piece, whose participation in various heavy music projects is no longer a surprise.

After the release of the album, Almyth performed at the Depot club, “which turned into a chaotic jam session and attracted a lot of heavy music fans”, but “our future plans are to play more concerts, record another album by the end of 2024 and explore other musical directions,” says Andre Tyron. The “Almyth” section has already started working on future plans to “play more concerts”: the group’s name can be seen in the list of participants of the “Filthy Hangout 2024” festival – this event will take place on April 19-21 in the concert halls of Ādmiņu Street.
