Almost one in three Norwegians buys Tesla

Norway has been a very important market for Tesla for many years. And even though many competitors have joined, Tesla still has a completely unique grip on Norwegian car buyers.

We see this not least in the brand new registration figures from March, which are now out. Tesla has the two best-selling cars this month, with the Model Y and Model 3.

Newcomer Model Y alone accounts for 3,305 registrations in March. At the same time, almost 1,700 Model 3s were sold and registered. Together, the two models account for around a third of the entire market in March.

Record share

The Tesla success also contributes to the electric cars having a record high market share in March. This month, there were 16,238 first-time registered new passenger cars. Of these, 13,982 were electric cars, corresponding to a share of 86.1 per cent.

Of the 32,342 new passenger cars in the first quarter, 26,800 are electric cars. This gives an electric car share of 82.9 per cent so far this year.

The total number of first-time registered passenger cars increased in March by 6 per cent compared with March last year. One of the reasons why the rate of registration and extradition increased after January and February was a new boat load with Tesla, which quickly affected the statistics.

Almost gone in Norway – but this is Europe’s best-selling

Model S started the Tesla adventure in Norway. Now it is Model Y and Model 3 that have taken over the sale.

Takes the entire top 10

– The electric car share is now at a level we have never seen before. At the same time last year, the share was 52.8 per cent, says director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen of the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

Five of the ten car models that top the list are newcomers that were not on the market last year. And all top 10 brands and models are pure electric cars.

Of the 25 car models that top the list after the first quarter, five are not pure electric cars.

The diesel cars barely enter the door before they are sold

The combination of SUV and electric car is what most Norwegian car buyers want most now. Like this one: electric XC40 from Volvo.

Long waiting time

– We can roughly summarize that now almost everyone wants an electric car, and what most people choose is a four-wheel drive SUV. The car brands that have such a combination in their offer, and which can also deliver, war and chip shortages taken into account, are the winners of the statistics so far this year, says Solberg Thorsen, in a press release.

Mid-range SUVs, large cars and compact-class cars top the list.

There is a long wait for many car models, and this means that only a few new passenger cars registered this year have been picked up straight from the store. A large number of new cars, not least new electric cars, are cars that were ordered last year.
