(NOTICIAS YA) .- Storm could bring historic snowfall to parts of the Midwest. More than 60 million people are under winter weather alerts triggered by two major storm systems taking shape this week.

The first will throw a significant amount of snow from the central plains to the Atlantic coast through Tuesday night, CNN reported.
The deepest snow will pile up in Iowa. Some of the snow will be very heavy with snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, says the Weather Prediction Center (WPC).
“If these snow totals materialize, they would be very rare in Iowa,” wrote the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
“On average, single daily snowfalls of one foot or more historically only occur every 15 to 20 years.”
If a foot of snow falls in Des Moines in one day, it will be only the 10th time a foot or more has fallen since 1884. The last time they saw so much snow in a day was in 2004. “Snow in the Midwest is not uncommon,” said CNN meteorologist Chad Myers, who passed years forecasting snow on the Plains.

What makes this system weird is how much it is expected to drop in a day. Des Moines is much more likely to see more than a foot of snowpack in two to three days.
“This storm with such a wide area of 12 to 18 inches can stretch highway cleaning assets,” Myers said. “Be prepared to get stuck for a few days.”
Outside of Iowa, snow of more than 4 inches is expected from Kansas to Michigan.
It’s not just the snow that can cause problems.
The ice could accumulate just south of the snow that stretches from Kansas to New Jersey. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice could form with localized patches of up to a quarter of an inch: “Travel can get dangerous in parts of this region,” according to the prediction center.
Rain will fall throughout the southeast, where daily temperatures will rise above average. Can be developed severe storms throughout the Mississippi River Valley, including eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee.

West Coast Atmospheric River Could Bring Record Snow
Another system is expected to traverse the region Tuesday through Wednesday.
“The midweek system that aligns with increased atmospheric humidity has the potential to shed an extreme amount of precipitation, potentially flirting with the length of snowfall records, in parts of southern California and western Great Basin “Said Jenn Varian, a meteorologist with the weather service in Las Vegas.
Sierra Nevada is expected to take the brunt of the humidity with this system, Varian said, but an additional spill could be possible depending on the height of the storms. The ridges of the mountains could see 60-100 inches of snow from Tuesday night through Friday morning, added the news outlet.
Northwest California, as of Monday, looks likely to see the most rain. “Humidity columns with AR (atmospheric river) events are always complicated and more details may not be known until the event begins to unfold,” the San Francisco National Weather Service office said.

The totals of Predicted rainfall Tuesday through Thursday nights range between 2.5 and 4.5 inches at the lowest elevation locations. In comparison, the hills could see 6 to 8 inches, maybe even isolated 10 to 13 inches of rain.
“The heavy rains can lead to debris flows and flash floods in and near recently burned areas, “warned the National Weather Service in San Francisco.
Those near these areas should be prepared in case evacuation is necessary.
Before this weekday system, much of the region will face strong winds. High wind advisories and advisories are posted from Los Angeles to Phoenix, where winds will blow between 45 and 55 mph today.
Tuesday through Wednesday, winds could reach gusts of up to 60 mph in parts of California.
