Almost half of Galicians are confined to their municipalities

Almost half of the 2.7 million people who reside in Galicia will be affected by the mobility restrictions imposed since yesterday by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the virus and which come into force on the eve of a weekend in which numerous trips were foreseen for the celebration of All Saints’ Day.

In this way, with the imposition of restrictions in the seven cities and some of their municipalities of influence, 45% of Galicians are confined to their municipalities or areas.

This is in addition to the fact that, with the closure of the border with Portugal and the perimeter closure decreed by the communities of Asturias and Castilla León, Galicia is, in practice, isolated.

Entry and exit limitations are established for Santiago, Ames and Teo; for Ferrol, Narón, Fene and Neda; for A Coruña and Arteixo; for Pontevedra, Poio and Marín; and in the municipalities of Vigo and Lugo, as well as for Vimianzo (A Coruña), apart from those already in the area of Ourense, O Carballiño and Verín.

Of course, the restrictions are made in an “enveloping” way for the group of municipalities, which is why travel between the closed border municipalities is allowed, for example between Santiago, Ames and Teo.

Along with the travel limitations, the municipalities of Ames, Teo, Ferrol, Narón, Fene, Neda and Vimianzo go to level 3 of restrictions and, additionally, there may only be meetings of cohabiting people.

This meeting restriction will also apply to municipalities that are now at level 2, such as A Coruña, Arteixo, Pontevedra, Poio, Marín, Vigo and Lugo. In total, some thirty localities will have meetings limited to only people living together.

Extension of measures

The Minister of Health, Julio García Comesaña, explained, in the press conference after the meeting of the subcommittee, which advises the Xunta on the management of the pandemic, that it is about “limiting the movements of entry and exit in urban Galicia ”On the occasion of this weekend.

However, the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has pointed out as a “possibility” to extend the perimeter closures of the cities and the limitation of meetings to only cohabitants on other weekends, as he said in a ceremony in Mos.

García Comesaña acknowledged that the restrictions adopted by the Galician Government may be “somewhat similar” to those of the Community of Madrid, but insisted that in Galicia it is a specific measure “appropriate” to the epidemiological situation and the specificity of this purpose of week.

He appealed to “common sense” so that this holiday of the Day of the Dead or Samaín, “is not like the previous ones” with numerous trips to cemeteries and family gatherings, but a “different day”.

García Comesaña insisted that it is about adopting measures to prevent mobility to “protect lives” in this “very special weekend” and once again ruled out, for now, a perimeter closure of the community.

In this sense, the Minister of Health that “the epidemiological problem is right now in the seven large cities” and some municipality in his area and appealed to the responsibility of all citizens to stay at home and these days are not “a missed opportunity ”to stop the spread of the virus.

In this sense, the general director of Public Health, Carmen Durán Parrondo, stressed that the epidemiological data of Galicia “motivate the measures”, after registering a cumulative incidence at seven days of 154.76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which translates into “Continuously” a greater number of cases and incidence; while at fourteen days it is placed with 265.98.

“Galicia continues to grow in number of cases,” he clarified, to indicate that it remains among the four communities with the least accumulated incidence.

As for the Santiago region, he commented that it has been “noticed that the measures that have been taken are taking effect”, but it is not “at the desired level” in accumulated incidence. Specifically, he pointed out that in the capital to seven days there are 234 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 457 to 14 days.

With respect to the municipalities of Pontevedra and Poio, he highlighted a “significant increase” in the number of cases from 140.5 to 206 this week in the former. And about that of Vigo he emphasized that “it presents an epidemiological situation” that is worrying. l
