Almost half of corona patients have a disturbed smell: ‘Strawberry tastes bad’

These are considerable numbers, according to olfactory sense researcher Sanne Boesveldt (Wageningen University), who coordinated the Dutch branch of the research.

According to her, it is a common complaint: distorted smell. “Patients have lost their sense of smell for a while, finally start to smell something again and then suddenly discover that everything stinks. That is shocking. If your food tastes bad, and you smell bad odors everywhere, it can hinder quality of life even more than loss of smell.”

Everything stinks

Gerdien Vogelzang from Groningen also has parosmia after she became infected with the corona virus. Her deodorant, that’s where it started. “One morning I discovered that it smelled awful. This just couldn’t be. I checked to see if my deodorant was out of date. But it wasn’t. I didn’t understand it,” says the 28-year-old store employee from Marum.

Long-term load

But that’s not all. Eating a piece of fruit is also no longer an option. “I suddenly smelled strawberries, very sweet. But they tasted like dish soap.”

Boesveldt believes that most people will fully regain their sense of smell and smell. “But I do think that it can take a long time and that there will always be a small group that will continue to suffer from it for a very long time.”
