Nearly half a million Cubans are currently in a kind of immigration limbo in the United States, with the same probability of facing deportation or accessing political asylum.
According to a report from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), more than 442,000 Cubans are in the process of expulsion from United States territory, although the majority are also waiting for a court date to request political asylum.
Lawyer Willy Allen, a specialist in immigration law, spoke in an interview with the Telemundo 51 channel, and pointed out that the standards for obtaining asylum are strict, so this may not be so easy to obtain in some cases.
The jurist explained that those who intend to request asylum and argue credible fear are required to prove specific political persecution in Cuba.
For this reason, thousands of Cuban families are currently experiencing the anguish of a legal limbo, in which they could be returned to the Island at any moment.
“We don’t know what we will do,” lamented Yulier, a resident of Miami for 8 years, who could soon be deported.
However, Allen gave some hope to those who find themselves in this situation, clarifying that those Cubans who have the I-220A document, which allows them to be under supervision in the United States, have a good chance of becoming legal.
The big problem, he indicated, is that the immigration system is currently collapsed due to the enormous migrant influx, with which the hearings have been postponed even until 2026 and 2027. Cuba occupies sixth place in the number of cases.
“Miami’s courts are saturated, they are overloaded,” added the jurist.
On the other hand, while the saturation of immigration institutions decreases, multiple deportations of rafters intercepted at sea continue. This weekend, for example, 20 people on a rustic boat were rescued by a cruise ship and will soon be returned to Cuba, the Coast Guard reported.
Despite the obstacles in their path, thousands of Cubans continue to leave the Island every year in search of a better life in the United States, and although sometimes this journey seems to have no end, many may have a good chance of remaining as legal residents.
