Almost all Czechs will have to go back to driving school. It turned out to be a big problem, the EU decided unequivocally

When it comes to cars and personal mobility in general, it is probably definitely clear to everyone that a lot will change in the coming years. And the transition to electric cars itself, which seems rushed and thoughtless, is only one part of the whole complicated puzzle. In the end, a completely different drive may win, or it may turn out that it simply won’t work without gasoline and diesel for the next decades.

You can only drive something

To make matters worse, the European Commission has prepared even more tricks that European drivers, including those in the Czech Republic, will have to pass. The real appetizer then is the effort to drive current drivers to driving school again, which is a consequence of the upcoming measure, which will most likely pass.

You probably know that today the vast majority of drivers have a license to drive vehicles of group B. This includes practically all ordinary cars, including, for example, vans or smaller tractors. The decisive factor is the upper weight limit, which is set at 3500 kg. It is relatively generous and cars can easily fit into it, even with the continuing trend of larger cars, or when importing something even bigger from the United States of America.

But that is exactly what they don’t like in Europe at all. Officials there believe that anyone who wants to drive heavy vehicles should have a special license to do so. And that’s why changes will come. Standard group B allows you to drive only those vehicles that will weigh up to 1800 kilograms. For cars weighing between 1.8 and 3.5 tons, you will already have to obtain a driving license for category B+, which will be created completely new.

This will be a really big problem for a large part of drivers in the Czech Republic, and the whole thing just shows the thoughtlessness of the individual steps that are taking place in the European Union. Everyone knows that current electric cars weigh much more than their equivalents with internal combustion engines. Most of the people who buy an electric car will also receive as a reward the need to get new “papers”.

Meaningless limits

Let’s look at an example. Such a BMW 5 is really on the edge. The version with a petrol engine has a curb weight in kilograms of exactly 1,800 kilograms. In theory, she would still fit into the old group. The same car, but with an electric drive, weighs 2205 kg and you would have to go to driving school again for it.

This is of course true of many vehicles. Owners of large SUVs cannot avoid it, regardless of whether they have any drivetrain or vans. However, even large station wagons can be out of date in many cases. In the case of electric cars, this will also apply to quite small cars, which is quite an inconvenience.

It’s hard to say who could have invented something like this, but he certainly didn’t run out of all kinds of consequences. Everything will be extremely administratively demanding and the question is how the drivers will react to it. It may discourage them from buying an electric car, for example, and prefer to buy a car with an internal combustion engine while it is possible. The distribution according to weight is also special, which is quite strict. You can have two practically identical vehicles next to each other, one weighing 1795 kg and the other 1805 kg. For one, your current driver’s license will suffice, while for the other, you will have to go back to driving school.
