Almost a year ago, Narek Sardaryan was released after 70 days as a prisoner of war. Continued tensions in the area where he was taken led to new fights this week.

It started as a normal summer day. Narek Sardaryan was out in the mountains herding the family’s sheep. He had been doing that for years. He was well-known in the area. Known every knoll and valley. He thought.

But this July day he went further than usual. Too far, it would soon turn out.

In the afternoon he lay down in the grass to take a nap. The sun was shining high in the sky. As a shadow covered the streaks of light he glimpsed through his eyelids, he opened them.

In front of him stood a group of soldiers.

When he saw their uniforms, he realized that the day would end terribly wrong.
