Almost 5 thousand Cubans in Spain obtained nationality in 2022

Thousands of Cuban residents in Spain, in 2022, last year, obtained the nationality of that country and the powerful Spanish passport (number two in the world). Cubans are part of the “Top 10” of foreigners who have become naturalized in that European Union (EU) country.

According to a report from the Spanish newspaper La Razón, in 2022, a total of 181,581 foreigners living in Spain obtained Spanish nationality from the Ministry of Justice. This figure is the highest since 2014 and represents an increase of 26.1% compared to 2021.

The foreigners who most naturalize as Spanish are those from Morocco, who represent almost 30% of the total naturalized people. Morocco has a huge emigration to Spain, especially to border cities like Ceuta and Melilla, which belong to the European country. They also move to the Canary Islands, geographically close.

Moroccans have to wait 10 years to become nationalized by residence, on the other hand, Latinos only have to wait two years of legal residence to apply for Spanish nationality.

Cubans, the tenth most nationalized in Spain

The Spanish press report Add that Colombians were the second group of foreigners who obtained the most Spanish nationality, with 11,125 cases. They are followed by Ecuadorians (10,845), Bolivians (9,016), Dominicans (8,100), Venezuelans (8,036) and Pakistanis (6,400).

The last places in the ranking are for Hondurans (5,778), Peruvians (5,152) and Cubans (4,780). In other words, almost 5 thousand Cubans residing in Spain were naturalized as Spanish in 2022. That figure would be much higher if those who, from Cuba or other parts of the world, have obtained Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory Law (LMD) are included. ) or “grandchild law”, as it is called in Latin America.

As expected, in the “Top ten” of nationalities there are many Latinos, with strong cultural and family ties with Spain, due to the era of colonization and the migratory crises to America from Spain on several occasions.
