Almost 2 million Dutch people have crypto, bitcoin is the largest

From research by Multiscope It turns out that there are no fewer than 1.9 million Dutch people who own crypto. In addition, it appears that this number has grown enormously in recent years. But which cryptocurrency is the most popular among the Dutch?

1 million new crypto Dutch

The research was conducted among more than 4,000 Dutch people and tries to provide a representative picture of the rest of the Netherlands. For example, it appears that 14% of the Dutch population over the age of 18 owns crypto, which amounts to 1.9 million people.

Multiscope reports that more than 1 million new crypto owners have been added compared to its previous poll in 2018. That may not be surprising given the bitcoin (BTC) rate performance in recent years.

Furthermore, it appears that especially men are interested in crypto; 70% of the 1.9 million Dutch people are male. The age category in which most crypto-Dutch people can be found is 18 to 34 years old. In addition, the average crypto owner in the Netherlands is more often highly educated.

Bitcoin most popular, cardano and XRP also in the list

Then to perhaps the most interesting part of the research. Which cryptocurrency is now the most popular among the Dutch? It won’t be a big surprise that bitcoin tops this list. More than 1.2 million Dutch people over the age of 18 own BTC, or 9% of the Dutch population.

In second place we find ethereum (ETH) by 6% and the list continues down with 5% ahead cardano (ADA)and 3% for both ripple (XRP) as dogecoin (DOGE).

How Dutch people buy bitcoin

Multiscope also made a number of findings regarding the money that the Dutch use to buy crypto via, for example, the Dutch network cryptobeurs Bitvavo. More than 63% of crypto owners use money from their checking account and 41% use money from the savings account.

According to Multiscope, women are more likely to buy crypto with their savings. Fortunately, only 2% of Dutch people use borrowed money for their crypto and buy bitcoin.
