Nearly 1,300 stranded Dutch travelers have returned from Morocco via repatriation flights in recent weeks. More than a thousand Dutch are still waiting for a special return flight, Minister of Foreign Affairs Stef Blok wrote in a Thursday letter to the House of Representatives.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now ensured that four repatriation flights could return to the Netherlands. Those flights took place on April 26, May 6, May 8, and May 11.
Blok writes that the safe return of the last thousand travelers “will keep the Cabinet’s full attention in the near future.” “To this end, frequent and intensive contact is taking place with the Moroccan authorities, including between the two foreign ministers,” said the minister.
The reason so many Dutch people got stuck in Morocco is that the North African country took far-reaching measures to combat the corona virus.
It is unclear how many Dutch people are stranded worldwide
In other countries, thousands of Dutch people were also stuck due to the corona crisis. It is not clear exactly how many people are involved.
This is partly because travelers can return home in various ways, for example via repatriation flights and commercial flights, and do not have to report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after returning home. There are also Dutch people who decide to stay abroad temporarily.
