Almost 13 million euros on Giro555, already given a lot of help to Beirut residents

Last week, another 1.5 million euros was deposited on Giro555 for the residents of Beirut. The counter thus stands at almost 13 million euros. The first money has already been spent, say the Cooperating Aid Organizations (SHO), including on hygiene kits and cleaning up the debris in the Lebanese capital.

Beirut was hit by a heavy explosion in the port area more than two weeks ago. This was caused by a fire spreading to a storage shed with a large amount of ammonium nitrate. The authorities had been warned several times about the risks of that storage, but did not intervene. At least 171 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured in the disaster.

The SHO opened Giro555 for the victims. The counter was up after last Friday’s action day at 11.5 million euros. The money was first spent on emergency aid, but is now used for other essentials.

Helping the economy get going

“For example, we give people sealing kits. With these, residents can safely close their doors and windows. Furthermore, children receive psychosocial help and educational packages so that they can still learn, despite the many destroyed schools,” says Marcel van der Steen, former NOS correspondent. who is now reporting to SHO from Beirut.

In addition, schools and health centers are receiving assistance with reconstruction and drinking water facilities in the city are being restored. Money is also given to get the local economy going again. Employees of Giro555 are present in the area themselves to see if the money is being well spent.

According to Van der Steen, the inhabitants of Beirut are very impressed by the collection in the Netherlands. “They feel seen.”

The Giro555 promotion will run until October 31.
