Almere Given Deadline to Plan Housing for Status Holders

Almere must come up with a plan of action for housing hundreds of status holders in the municipality by 2 June at the latest. If the municipality does not do so, the province itself will designate homes in Almere.

Almere has already been postponed three times for a plan to house status holders. The most recent deadline was March 15. It now appears that there was a plan at the time, but that the mayor and aldermen did not submit it. According to the province, they first wanted to arrange more support in the city council and housing corporations.

Status holders are asylum seekers who are entitled to a home, because it has already been decided that they may stay in the Netherlands. Almere has to accommodate several hundred status holders. If the city does not come up with a plan within the deadline, the province will consider it at the municipality’s expense.

The provincial government of Flevoland wants Almere to have made up the entire backlog by December 31 of this year.
