Among the many statements made by the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez Almeidaduring the false video call with his supposed namesake from kyiv (Ukrainian capital), there is one that has gone more unnoticed in the face of his predisposition to deport Ukrainian refugees to fight on the front: the confession of not having read any of the books of Almudena Grandes and that the controversy with her is due to the fact that she has become an “icon of the left”.

The video of the joke played on the Madrid councilor, who already denounced at the end of June, was published yesterday afternoon, quickly arousing a barrage of reactions of all kinds. During the 17 minute video length, made up of different fragments of the conversation held, the mayor of Madrid makes several statements that are being questioned by public opinion. Among them, the already mentioned promise to deport the Ukrainian refugees in Madrid to participate in the war, his conviction that “it is necessary to punish the Russian bastards here in Spain and in Madrid”; his acquiescence with the idea of seizing assets from Russian citizens present in Madrid to give them to the Ukrainians or the lack of knowledge about the figure of Stepan Banderanational symbol of Ukraine discussed for its collaboration with the German Nazi regime during World War II.

In another fragment (from minute 11:29), the comedians asked Almeida about the controversy with Almudena Grandes, about which she already stated after her death that “she does not deserve to be Madrid’s favorite daughter”. On this occasion, when her interlocutor tells her that “I hate her too [a Almudena Grandes] because I haven’t read any of his books”, the mayor, smiling and nodding, assures that he hasn’t read any of his books either, but that “there’s been a lot of controversy in the city” about the writer.

According to Almeida’s words, the problem is not so much the “figure of Almudena Grandes” in itself, but the “left politicians” of Madrid, for whom the writer has “become a kind of icon”. Having said that, the alderman emphasizes again that “I have not read any book by Almudena Grandes”.
