The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagrorejected this Friday the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela with which he confirmed the victory of Nicolas Maduro in the presidential elections of July 28 and said that the TSJ and the electoral body have acted with “total opacity.”

Almagro expressed his “deep rejection” of the Venezuelan court’s decision, arguing in a statement that the electoral authorities “proclaimed Maduro in a hasty manner.”

Also “based on a partial bulletin issued orally, with numbers that showed mathematical impossibilities and without presenting the disaggregated results.”

For Almagro, the electoral authorities and the TSJ have acted with “total opacity” and with a behavior that “has been characterized by the promotion of conspiracy theories and the issuance of announcements and statements without any documentary support.”

Just a week ago, the OAS Permanent Council approved by consensus a resolution demanding that the Venezuelan authorities publish the minutes of the elections “expeditiously.”

Venezuela is not a member of the OAS, as its government decided to withdraw from the organization in 2017 (an exit that became effective in 2019) in response to what it considered interference by the Washington-based organization in its internal affairs.

The United States government also spoke out on Friday about the decision of the Venezuelan Supreme Court, stating that it “lacks all credibility” given the “overwhelming evidence” that the opposition standard-bearer Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia received the majority of the votes.

The Supreme Court of Justice, controlled by judges close to Chavez, confirmed on Thursday that the disputed results of the July 28 elections gave Maduro the victory over his opponent González Urrutia.

The court’s ruling, which unequivocally and unrestrictively concludes its review of the elections, comes 22 days after Maduro himself requested this process. EFE (I)
