According to the housing department, a total of 5,363 allotment gardens were sold between 1993 and the end of 2020. The city has had a right of first refusal for over ten years. After that, however, the owner was able to sell the green space at a high price, said a spokesman for Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaal (SPÖ) in advance. As of January 1, 2021, the City of Vienna still owned 13,805 allotment gardens with a total size of around 5.4 million square meters.
ÖVP against sales ban
“Land is becoming more and more valuable in urban areas and is rightly considered the gold of cities today. In order to guarantee the use of these popular green oases for future generations and to prevent any speculation due to rising land prices at an early stage, the urban allotment gardens should from now on remain in the hands of the public, ”argued Gaal of the city government’s move.
The ÖVP is vehemently against it. Allotment gardens have therefore always made a significant contribution to property creation in Vienna. “With the Rot-Pink plan to stop the sale of allotment gardens, families are being deprived of the chance of affordable property. That can’t happen. We are therefore submitting an urgent motion as well as a dismissal motion in the upcoming municipal council to prevent this step, ”announced town hall club chairman Markus Wölbitsch.
FPÖ asks Ludwig about “Causa Nevrivy”
The FPÖ also speaks out against the proposal. In the local council she also wants to shed light on the “Causa Nevrivy”. It is about investigations against the Donaustadt district chairman Ernst Nevrivy (SPÖ), concerning a property deal in Kagran. The FPÖ made an urgent request to Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) to clarify “why he covers these dubious machinations of his party friend”, said the FPÖ boss Dominik Nepp in Vienna.
