Allocate 1% of global spending on weapons to address poverty: Sheinbaum

Mexico will propose within the G20 that one percent of global spending on arms be allocated to serving the poorest people around the world and combating misery on a global scale, said President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

During the work of the so-called Group of 20 – which includes the most powerful and emerging economies in the world – which will take place on November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Mexican government will emphasize the need to reduce poverty in the world.

“We are going to say that, we are going to defend what our project represents, and also to propose, for example, what would happen if one percent of arms spending were allocated to serving the neediest in the world,” said the president this Friday morning at the National Palace.

The head of the Executive stressed that this “is what we have to demand in the face of wars, in the face of arms race, and that these resources be allocated to the poorest in the world. That is what we are going to present to the G20 with great pride for what Mexico represents in the world.”

Another point that his administration will demand at the G20 will be women’s rights and how progress has been made on this issue in our country.

He emphasized that the representation of Mexico will attend with the pride of representing a people with a lot of conscience and a nation that is a cultural power, and they will present the results that have been achieved in our country from the regime of the Fourth Transformation.

“And talk about the perspective of what we represent, that it is not the market that solves the problems, that it is good that the market exists; but rights exist, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the great rights are recognized there,” he noted.
