The animal died, said the Bronx Zoo, which spoke of a “tragic case of animal abuse”. The female received extensive medical care and was fed. However, it succumbed to its injuries on Sunday, the statement said.

“This alligator suffered and died because her owner decided to throw her into a cold lake in an extremely weakened state rather than give her the veterinary care that could have saved her,” zoo officials said. “Wild animals are not pets.”
An autopsy showed that the animal suffered from chronic and severe weight loss as well as extreme anemia and infections in the intestines and on the skin.

The reptile, estimated to be five to six years old and about one and a half meters long, also reportedly had a chronic stomach ulcer because of a bathtub stopper that it swallowed when it was supposed to be a pet. The bathtub plug was removed by veterinarians.
The bathtub plug can be seen on an x-ray.
