“Alliance of Concerned Teachers Request DepEd to Implement Modular Classes Due to Extreme Heat in Central Visayas Classrooms”

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) in Central Visayas has called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement modular classes in the region immediately due to the extreme heat in classrooms. The request is in line with the guidelines set out by Department Order 037 s. 2022, which allows for the cancellation or suspension of classes and work in schools during natural disasters and other calamities. The ACT stated that classrooms have become “non-conducive” for learning and teaching due to the high heat index. DepEd has stated that schools may shift to remote or modular learning during periods of extreme heat, with some schools already implementing hybrid and modular learning. The threat of heat stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion should not be taken lightly and addressed with urgency, according to the ACT. The Cebu City Council has passed a resolution urging DepEd to shift to online classes during the summer due to PAGASA’s warning of intense heat levels in Central Visayas.
