Yusra Mardini

Born and raised in Syria, Yusra has been a swimmer since childhood. Growing up in Daraa, a suburb of Damascus, Mardini trained to swim with the support of the Syrian Olympic Committee. In 2012, she represented Syria at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in the 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle. Meanwhile, her house was destroyed in the Syrian civil war. Mardini and her sister Sarah fled Syria in August 2015 to Lebanon and then to Turkey. From there they decided to sail to Greece by boat with 18 immigrants.

The boat, which could not carry more than six or seven people, crashed on the way. Then Yusra and her sister Sarah and two other swimmers jumped into the sea and swam for more than 3 hours. After the engine started running again, they arrived in Lesbos, Greece. Then they went to Germany through Europe. There they settled in Berlin. Yusra’s parents and younger sister later arrived in Germany from Syria. Yusra, 22, who currently lives in Hamburg, Germany, was a member of the refugee Olympic team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. On April 27, 2017, Mardini was appointed Ambassador of the UNHCR Goodwill.
