The Allgäu Comets have been waiting for a win in the German Football League (GFL) for four games now. Their last success was at the end of May with a 36:30 win against the Saarland Hurricanes – the same opponent awaits the Allgäu team this weekend. The match in Völklingen starts on Saturday at 4 p.m.
GFL: Battle for play-off places rages
Both teams are trying to collect points in the fight for the play-off spots. These are not out of reach for the Comets with their 2:5 record – but coach Elias Gniffke’s team cannot afford any more slip-ups. The pressure has certainly increased after the devastating 14:96 defeat against the Potsdam Royals, the undefeated leaders of the GFL North Division.
These young players gained their first GFL experience
The Comets, who are still plagued by injury concerns and who also have a new defensive coordinator in Dominik Titz, who succeeded Andrew Malson, recently saw some players from the U19 team gain their first GFL experience. The junior team, which plays in a joint team with Landsberg X-Press, has already finished the season in the U19 regional league. Danilo Wiegand (DB), Daniel Schlemmer (DL), Julian Hartmann (OL) and Jannis Eberle (RB) got their playing time against Potsdam and will also make the trip to Saarland. Gniffke had already announced shortly after the Potsdam game that none of the long-term injured players were expected to return.
