Allergy: – Death after a teaspoon mistake

On 27 December, Craig McKinnon (24) proposed to his girlfriend Jess Prinsloo (24) during a holiday in South Africa.

Four days later Prinsloo was dead, writes Manchester Evening News.

The reason was that The 24-year-old had used the wrong teaspoon in the teacup.

Last week Craig McKinnon had to go home alone from South Africa to Salisbury in the UK.

– The voice broke

In an interview with the British tabloid newspaper The Mirror McKinnon says he proposed to his girlfriend at God’s Window in Mpumalanga province.

This is a famous lookout point, and a popular place to propose.

– Several members of her family live in South Africa, and she had not been there for six years. I just knew there was no better place to propose, he says.

McKinnon says that he met Jess at the university in Bournemouth in 2019, and that they moved in together two years later.

– My voice broke when I got down on one knee and asked: “Will you marry me?”. She said, “Oh my God,” and started to cry before saying yes. The look on her face… It meant everything.

Ended fatally

After the proposal at God’s Window, the couple celebrated with Champagne.

On 30 December the couple went to Jess Prinsloo’s mother’s house in Johannesburg.

That’s when the fatal accident happened.

The 24-year-old had a milk allergy, which in rare cases can lead to allergic shock, according to The pocket doctor.

Can be life-threatening

The teaspoon Prinsloo used in his teacup had been in contact with milk.

Just a few minutes after drinking the tea, she had severe breathing problems and went into an allergic shock.

This is a potentially life-threatening condition and requires immediate help.

According to Craig McKinnon, the fiancee always had two adrenaline syringes with her, in case she accidentally came into contact with milk products.

He says that she had several near misses after ingesting things she could not tolerate.

This time it was too late, and the adrenaline pens didn’t help her.

On New Year’s Eve, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

– When Jess died, a part of me died too. No one is to blame for her death. But, my goodness, she had several near misses, says McKinnon.

Had to be revived

He is convinced that all the near misses her fiancé had had in the past were the cause of her death.

If you have had an allergic shock before, you have according to The pocket doctor high risk of having another anaphylactic shock.

McKinnon says that her fiancee was diagnosed with a milk allergy when she was only nine months old.

Among other things, she had to be revived as an 18-year-old after, according to him, she had eaten an Indian dish that contained milk.

– Another time she ordered a vegan dessert that was supposed to contain no dairy products at all, but then she needed antihistamines, an EpiPen, and a hospital visit. I haven’t eaten dairy products in three years because it wasn’t worth the risk, says McKinnon.

– Touched everyone she met

Jess Prinsloo’s survivors have set up a fundraising campaign at GoFundMe to cover hospital and funeral expenses.

This is what they write on the website:

– Jess was a wonderful daughter, sister, niece, friend and fiancee. She lit up every room she entered and touched the lives of everyone she met. If you ever met Jess, you would probably know what her “fun fact” about herself was: That she was allergic to milk.
