Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri said his side are “sorry and angry” after losing 4-3 to Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday and missing the opportunity to reach the knockout stage for the first time since. 2013-2014.
Juventus are third in Group H and will look to qualify for the European League.
“It is more than playing with the wrong approach, we were bad in defense in the first half, we are disappointed and angry because we were eliminated from the Champions League,” Allegri told reporters.
“Now we have to concentrate on the (Italian) championship and continue to bet against Paris Saint-Germain (next Wednesday) because we have the chance to qualify for the Europa League.”
“We made a lot of mistakes tonight, but we don’t need to talk about it now. I don’t consider it a failure, in football you have to accept defeats too.
“We are sorry and angry. The team ended the game well so it’s not a physical problem. We have to keep working.”
Juventus are having a bad season so far, occupying eighth place in the league, ten points behind leaders Napoli.
But Allegri hopes the players will bring the fighting spirit shown in Lisbon to the national competition.
“Now let’s think about the Italian championship, let’s start from the last 20 minutes (of this match) and try to win in Lecce (Saturday). We have to do our best and keep working to stay in the race for the title.”
“We have four league games before we stop (due to the World Cup). We have to recover our energy and with the players we have we have to do well.”
Allegri led three young players in the second half against Benfica, and the trio attracted attention, which made them say they are promising for the future.
He added: “I’m happy with this trio, they have great efficiency. Fabio Meretti has participated in many matches and Matthias Sole and Samuel Elling have also dealt well.”
“We could have made better use of some chances in the end. But the trio gave the team the mental energy it needed.”
