Last week, Tino Chrupalla was hospitalized during an election rally. The AfD immediately spoke of an “assault incident,” but investigators did not confirm this. Now the AfD leader speaks out himself.

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla assumes that an attack was carried out on him on the sidelines of the election rally in Ingolstadt a week ago. “Overall, this attack on me can be seen as an attack,” he said at a press conference in Berlin.

Chrupalla presented an excerpt from a report on a tissue sample. On Friday after the incident at the Dresden Municipal Clinic, he had “the entire puncture” on his upper arm removed and had it examined pathologically.

The report presented speaks of a “defect” “at least” four millimeters deep and “inflammatory changes”. It goes on to say: “Finally, the present histological findings are compatible with a puncture/puncture channel that extends into the deep dermis (at least 4 mm).”

The report was only sent to the Ingolstadt public prosecutor’s office shortly before the press conference, the authority said. An assessment “cannot therefore be made at this point in time”. “The findings will be examined in connection with the previous investigation results, in particular the findings of the Ingolstadt Clinic, and will be included in the investigation.”

Citing statements from the bodyguards of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), who accompanied him at the appointment in Ingolstadt, Chrupalla said that a bloodstain was found on his right arm. The shirt and jacket were confiscated by the police and are being examined.

An examination of Chrupalla’s clothing showed that it was “his own blood,” the public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday. “According to current assessments, this blood adhesion probably corresponds to the diagnosed puncture injury.”

This is how Chrupalla describes the events

When asked, the AfD leader once again described the events on the sidelines of the election event from his perspective and pointed out that he had also stated this to the investigators: Accordingly, he was greeted by party friends when he arrived after getting out of the car. Shortly afterwards there were requests for selfies and autographs and further “encounters with young people” – “including selfies where the arm was put around the shoulder”. He didn’t find anything in this situation, not even a puncture. “I didn’t notice anything.” Seven to eight minutes later he noticed an untypical pain in his arm, which became hard up to the elbow. Afterwards he became dizzy relatively quickly. He had a nausea and a severe headache.

Chrupalla was then taken to hospital, where he was monitored in intensive care for one night. The AfD leader said he gave at least three blood samples in Ingolstadt for the hospital and investigators. Afterwards, he had further blood samples taken privately and given to laboratories. He hopes for further results in the next few days and weeks, and all results will also be made available to the investigators. “So far, no substances have been detected in the blood samples.” However, you also have to know specifically what you are looking for. When asked what they were looking for, he mentioned “all sorts of substances, mercury, Novichok is certainly among them (…) We cannot rule out which people or even services may have carried out something here.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok; he barely survived.

Chrupalla: Strength at 70 percent

Regarding his health, Chrupalla said that in terms of strength he sees himself at 70 percent. In the morning he still feels “very bad”. He suffers from loss of appetite.

Investigators said on Friday that there was no evidence of poisoning until then. According to the prosecutor’s office and the doctor’s letter, tests on Chrupalla’s blood were unremarkable both at the hospital and by investigators. The criminal police wanted to interview more witnesses. The final examination of Chrupalla’s clothing and the evaluation of other evidence were still pending.

“The investigations by the Ingolstadt public prosecutor’s office continue to focus on the open question of when and how this diagnosed puncture wound on Mr. Chrupalla’s right upper arm occurred as part of the election campaign event on the theater forecourt in Ingolstadt and who caused it,” the authority now said with. “In order to clarify this, additional witnesses are currently being identified and interviewed, video recordings are being viewed and assessments are being carried out. So far there are no initial suspicions against any specific people.”
