Allegations in the Wirecard scandal: Scholz defends its own actions

Federal finance minister Scholz is also criticized in the billion dollar Wirecard balance sheet scandal. It’s about lack of education. Scholz points out that Wirecard has been assessed by well-known auditors for ten years.

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz has rejected allegations of insufficient clarification in the billion-dollar Wirecard accounting scandal. For ten years the company had been checked by a large accounting firm with a good reputation, said the SPD politician on ZDF. These have not found any irregularities.

Since spring 2019 there have been stricter tests. At the end of last year, a total of three accounting firms were active, said Scholz to allegations from the opposition that he had acted too late. “Because we are among those who do not duck away, we have put everything on the table,” added the minister, referring to a report from the Ministry of Finance to the Bundestag Finance Committee. “In this situation, everyone must be willing to explain everything that is necessary.”

Target auditor law

Scholz announced another reform of auditor law. The supervisory authorities should also be able to take more active action in an emergency. The aim must be to prevent balance sheets from being checked year after year without irregularities being discovered.

The leaders in the finance committee want to decide on a special meeting of the committee during the summer break on Monday. Four groups – the Union, the Greens, the Left and the FDP – were in favor, coalition circles said Friday. SPD politicians also signaled their approval. The Wirecard balance sheet lacks 1.9 billion euros, which is why the payment processor recently had to file for bankruptcy.
