Allegations Against Russell Brand: Denials, Controversies, and Possible Media Attack

The Sunday Times, The Times of London and Channel 4’s Dispatches program relied on allegations from four women who knew Brand at the height of his fame.

One woman told the media that Brand had raped her, while three others accused him of sexual assault. One of the women also claimed that he was physically and emotionally abusive. The women said they were upset to talk about what happened only after they were approached by journalists.

Even before the allegations were made public, Brand released a video in which he denied the allegations, stating that he had received extremely disturbing letters from the media, but did not name them.

“These allegations relate to a time when I was working in the mass media, when I was in newspapers all the time, when I was in films and, as I have written extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous,” Brand said, stressing that all his relationships always were by mutual consent and absolutely voluntary. “I was always open about it then, almost too open, and I am open now,” he added.

Brand also suggested that the media reports were part of a coordinated attack to discredit him for his views. The brand has been criticized for its skepticism about Covid-19 vaccines and interviews with controversial podcasters such as Joe Rogan.
