UN Special Envoy for the Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese alleges that Palestinian doctor Adnan Al-Bours was sexually abused to death while in custody in Israeli prisons.
Albanese wrote in a post on her X account on Monday: “A doctor. An excellent surgeon. The embodiment of the Palestinian ethic. He was probably raped to death.”
Likely raped to death.

“The racism of the Western media not covering this, and Western politicians not reporting it, along with the thousands of other testimonies and allegations of rape and other forms of ill-treatment and torture suffered by Palestinians in Israeli prisons, is absolutely disgusting” , Albanese said.

Palestinian surgeon Dr. Adnan Al-Bours spent much of his career fixing broken limbs and injured bodies at Al-Sifah Hospital in Gaza.
In December 2023, he was arrested by Israeli forces from a hospital in Gaza. Since then no one heard of him until his death.
In a brief statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to Sky News that Dr Al-Bours was captured by its personnel. On December 19, 2023, it reports that the surgeon was transferred to an Israeli military base called Sde Teiman, which has been used to examine prisoners since the beginning of the war.
Allegations of physical, mental and sexual abuse are numerous. A former inmate of the camp, Dr. Khalid Hamouda, estimates that many of the prisoners in Sde Teiman were medical professionals.
“In the camp where I was, there were about 100 prisoners. I think at least a quarter of them were in health care. Some of them were doctors, nurses and technicians.”
Dr Hamouda was put to work by the base guards as their assistant or ‘sawhis’ and remembers being told to bring Dr Al Bours to the gate. When he was picked up, his fellow doctor said he had been badly beaten and was in pain all over his body.
“He thought he might have broken a rib,” Dr. Hamouda said. “He wasn’t even able to go to the bathroom by himself.”

What can be done to ensure accountability for allegations of abuse against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails?
Welcome to our live broadcast today. I would like to introduce our first guest, Ahmed Al-Bours, the brother of the late Palestinian doctor Adnan Al-Bours, who was allegedly sexually abused to death in Israeli prisons. Ahmed, thank you for joining us today.
Our second guest is Jonathan Greenbaum, an Israeli human rights lawyer and activist who has been working on cases of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Jonathan, thank you for joining us as well.
Ahmed, to begin with, how are you coping with the loss of your brother and the allegations surrounding his death?
Ahmed: My brother’s death has been a great loss to our family and the Palestinian community. The allegations are deeply disturbing and heart-wrenching. We demand justice for him and all the other victims of Israeli abuse and violence.
Jonathan, as an Israeli human rights lawyer, what are your thoughts on these allegations? Can you provide any insight into the conditions and treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons?
Jonathan: I’ve represented many Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and can attest to the deplorable conditions they face, including overcrowding, lack of adequate medical care, and physical and psychological abuse. Allegations of sexual abuse are not new, and they must be investigated thoroughly. The Israeli government must take immediate steps to end these violations and ensure the rights of all prisoners, regardless of their ethnicity or background, are respected.
Ahmed, what do you believe needs to be done to bring about accountability for Dr. Al-Bours’s death and to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future?
Ahmed: Firstly, the Israeli government must acknowledge these atrocities and hold those responsible accountable. Secondly, international organizations like the United Nations must put pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestine and respect the human rights of all Palestinians, including prisoners. the world must stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and support their struggle for justice and freedom.
Jonathan, do you think international pressure would be effective in bringing about change in this regard? And what about the role of the Israeli people themselves in demand
