NEW YORK — Puerto Rican pride will be celebrated this Sunday throughout New York City in its typical colorful style, and in person, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The parade begins at 11:00 am and runs along the iconic stretch of Manhattan between 43rd and 79th streets. This year it is dedicated to the municipality of Cidra, in Puerto Rico; also known as the Town of Eternal Spring.

However, the festivities begin before the parade on Sunday. Parade organizers and Mayor Eric Adams will raise the Puerto Rican flag at Bowling Green Park in Lower Manhattan on Friday afternoon to officially kick off parade weekend. A fundraising gala from the Central Park Zoo follows Saturday night to support the college assistance efforts of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

“This is a historic year for the Parade, and our return to Fifth Avenue is another sign that New York City and the Puerto Rican community are strong, resilient and as vibrant as ever,” said Parade Board President of Puerto Rico’s National Day, Louis Maldonado, announcing the planned return last month.

“The Board of Directors of the National Parade of Puerto Rico invites all Puerto Ricans in the area of ​​New York City, Puerto Rico and throughout the extended homeland (diaspora) to join us on June 12 to exclaim WEPA! and sing ‘What a beautiful flag,’ just as we have done for the last 64 years,” he said.
