All riders were tested negative for the corona virus on Monday on the second and last rest day of the Vuelta a España. The same applies to the staff members and the other employees in the cycling bubble.
A total of 681 corona tests were conducted on Monday: 528 among the teams and the other 153 among the employees of the organization. Due to the negative results, the Vuelta can be ‘just’ finished this week.
It was already the fourth test lap in the Tour of Spain. Everyone was also tested on arrival in Spain, just before the first stage on October 20 and last Monday on the first rest day. All those times, no one in the Vuelta bubble turned out to be infected.
“We would like to thank all teams and riders for the cooperation and vigilance they have shown and will continue to show until the last stage”, the international cycling association UCI wrote in a Tuesday statement.
The Tour of Spain will continue on Tuesday with a time trial of 33.7 kilometers and will last until Sunday, when a flat stage in Madrid is scheduled. Until then, the peloton will be presented with three more hill stages and a mountain stage.
Richard Carapaz of INEOS Grenadiers is currently the leader in the general classification with a ten-second lead over closest attacker Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Wout Poels (Bahrain McLaren) is the best Dutchman in sixth place, more than five minutes from Carapaz.
