The forces of the Fire Department in Ilia will be on alert throughout the night. Although the front of the fire in Geraki Amaliadas presents an improved image, a battle is being fought to bring it under control. It is positive that the fires in the area of Panopoulos and Nea Manolada were brought under partial control.
Strong ground forces remain and operate at the scene, namely 265 firefighters with 6 groups of pedestrians from the 1st and 6th EMODE and 83 vehicles. Before darkness fell, 8 aircraft, as well as 9 helicopters, of which two for coordination, attempted from the air.
They are investigating an arson scenario
What is surprising is that a total of 9 fires have broken out in Ilia since Friday morning. For this reason, a team of DAEE has gone to the area in order to investigate the causes of their manifestation. The coordination of the Fire Brigades by the head of the Fire Brigade, lieutenant general Theodoros Vagias and the deputy chief, lieutenant general Nikos Roumeliotis, who have moved to the area.
A firefighter was seriously injured
In the meantime, a firefighter who was working in Geraki Ilia was seriously injured in the leg. As it became known from the Fire Department, this is a forest commando, aged 35, of the 6th EMODE, with the first information stating that he suffered a crushing fracture. The firefighter was transported by Bell helicopter to the General Hospital of Pyrgos, to undergo the first tests and it will be decided whether he will then be transferred to the University Hospital of Rio or to a hospital in Athens.
All the fires that broke out in the prefecture of Ilia were tackled, after the “huge and immediate mobilization of the fire brigade”, as the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, states in his post on “X”, adding that nine different fires broke out in the prefecture of Ilia within a few hours and with wind gusts of 6-7 Beaufort.
In particular, Mr. Kikilias underlines:
“With wind gusts of 6-7 Beaufort, within a few hours 9 (!) different fires broke out in the prefecture of Ilia. With a huge and immediate mobilization of the fire brigade, all the fires were dealt with. Especially in the fire that occurred in Geraki Amaliadas, the Civil Protection forces fought hard, while one of our firemen from the 6th Forest Command Group was seriously injured in the leg. I wish you all the best and I thank all the men and women of the Fire Service for their professionalism and selflessness. With regard to the causes of the fires, the DAEE has been taken over, a team of which has already moved to Ilia”.

112 has been activated
Earlier, two messages through 112 were sent to residents of the area. In particular, at 2:30 p.m. a diversion message was issued by 112 from the areas of Tsichlaiika, Bretaiika and Kryoneri to Amaliada. At 15:48 a warning message was issued by 112 for readiness in the wider area of Havari settlement.
