On September 12, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide released the brand new one-, two- and three-Key awards for the most outstanding hotels in the United States. This is the second announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, adding a selection of hotels from across the country to the previous selection of hotels in select locations.

This announcement comes four years after a major overhaul of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes more than 5,000 hotels around the world, and not one of them is just a room for the night. Each of these hotels has been assessed and found to be excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, personality and character, value for money and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting.

Which brings us back to the Keys. The Key hotels below are the result of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts and represent the highlights of our wider selection. Like the MICHELIN stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys recognize our most outstanding hotels.

The new 3-Key hotels of the American West

In our second selection of Key Hotels in the USA, five more hotels are added to the exclusive 3-Key Club. Three of them are located in the American West: Sage Lodge in Montana, Amangiri in Utah and Canyon Ranch Tuscon in Arizona. Each of these hotels takes advantage of the splendor of the American West, with Canyon Ranch and Amangiri located amidst spectacular desert landscapes.

Sage Lodge in Pray, Montana may not ring a bell immediately, but this remote ranch has a famous neighbor: Its 1,200 acres are just a half-hour drive from Yellowstone National Park.

The Dewberry — Charleston, South Carolina

Big winner: Southern hospitality

Austin, Texas, and Charleston, South Carolina, have opened a combined 15 new Key hotels – a proud symbol for two cities often cited as the fastest-growing in the U.S. The hospitality industry has kept pace, with gems like the Commodore Perry Estate (Austin) and the Dewberry (Charleston) incorporating the history of their buildings into their delightful luxury boutique feel.

The Georgian — Santa Monica, California

Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Although California wasn’t a new addition to the list of Keys in our second selection on September 12, it’s worth taking a second look at the many Keys we highlighted in our first announcement in April. Here, we point you to coastal gems like the sublime architectural creations in Big Sur (Post Ranch Inn and Ventana), beachfront luxury in Santa Monica (especially the newly opened Georgian), and wine country favorites like the SingleThread and the Madrona.

What we like: Each of these hotels opens the door to the best aspects of its location – and lets us see each place with different eyes.
