Stadiums, teams, boycott calls: Everything about the football World Cup in Qatar in 2022

Why is the World Cup in Qatar?

In 2008, FIFA decided to host the two World Cups in 2018 and 2022 at the same time. Eleven applications from 13 countries were received for the two tournaments. Until the award, several countries withdrew their candidacies for 2018 and concentrated on the tournament in 2022. Qatar prevailed against competitors from the USA, South Korea, Japan and Australia.

In spring 2020 it was revealed that the votes of three FIFA officials had been bought. Without these votes, Qatar and the USA would have been tied and Sepp Blatter would have had the casting vote. Blatter had voted for the USA, so the World Cup would not have been awarded to Qatar, but to the USA.

There are four allegations in the room:

  1. Corruption in awarding: Three FIFA officials were offered money from Qatar to vote for their applications. The discovery of this corruption affair in 2020 did not prevent FIFA from holding it in Qatar, after all, the stadiums are already under construction.
  2. Qatar’s lack of football tradition: Critics accuse FIFA that Qatar has no internationally significant football tradition and has never played in a World Cup. At the time of the award, Qatar was ranked 113th in the world.
  3. Climatic conditions: Due to its climatic conditions, the World Cup in Qatar had to be postponed to winter. Air conditioning systems were also installed in the stadiums. This caused criticism, as these systems are not climate-friendly despite their modern design.
  4. Human rights situation: The workers from Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan are poorly paid, housed in miserable conditions and work without adequate security measures. Various human rights organizations have come to this conclusion. They count 6,500 mostly unexplained deaths on the construction sites of the stadiums.

Who is calling for a boycott?

Qatar has introduced a number of reforms since 2017. However, these are “not properly implemented, which means that the exploitation of workers continues,” wrote Amnesty International in November on a new report on the football World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The human rights organization demands that organizations such as the world association Fifa have to act.

According to Amnesty, workers cannot simply leave Qatar or change jobs despite a corresponding law, and wages are often not paid or paid too late. In addition, migrant workers still have little access to justice to claim wages.

Qatar has “one of the most terrible anti-queer legislation in the world,” write the Juso and call for a boycott. In addition, over 6,500 people have already died during the construction of the World Cup stadiums. “With all understandable joy about the qualification, the Juso is calling for a boycott of the tournament,” writes the SP Young Party.

Qatar provided for twelve stadiums in the original application dossier. But that caused severe criticism, as these would not find sustainable use. With the permission of FIFA, the number of stadiums was finally reduced to eight.

  • Al-Bayt Stadium, 60,000 seats
  • Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, 21,282 seats
  • Education City Stadium, 40,000 seats

Since the Italians only played 0-0 against Northern Ireland in Belfast at the same time, the Nati overtook the European champions in the table and therefore flies straight to Qatar. The Swiss national team prevailed in Group C of the qualifying round with five wins and three draws against Italy, Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania.

In August, coach Vladimir Petkovic announced his resignation as a national team coach. The almost 58-year-old became the new coach of Girondins Bordeaux. The coaching position was taken over by Murat Yakin, who was previously on the sidelines at FC Schaffhausen.

With the departure of Petkovic, the most successful era in the history of the Swiss national team ends. In 2014, the former coach of YB and Lazio Rom succeeded Ottmar Hitzfeld. He led the national team to the 2016 European Championship round of 16, the 2018 World Cup round of 16 and the 2019 Nations League final tournament. The highlight came at the 2020 European Championship this summer. Switzerland eliminated world champions France in the round of 16 and only failed in the quarter-finals in the penalty shoot-out to Spain.
