Dresden. Shortly before the state elections on September 1, parties want to move again for the election. But civil society actors and associations are also concerned about “protecting democracy and stopping right-wing extremism”. That’s why the alliances “We are the Firewall Dresden” and “Heart instead of Hetze” want a big show at 3 pm on Theaterplatz Dresden this Sunday, August 25.

The local groups of IG Metall and Fridays for Future have announced their participation. Speeches are planned from the Jewish and Muslim communities as well as the Dresden Foreign Council. The bands Brass Riot, Coexist and Searching For Home provide musical support for the rallies. When the demonstrators left for a walking rally through the old and new towns around 4pm, the groups Hope – fighting racism and Campact eV will give speeches. The transfer should take about an hour. This is followed by another hour of rallies and music. The demo is scheduled to end at 6 p.m. According to registration forecasts, more than 5,000 people could show up at Theatreplatz.

“With our demo we want to send a simple message to the English people: Go vote and vote for democratic parties,” said one of the organizers of the demo. The large demonstration is also linked to a call on all democratic parties “not to collaborate with anti-right parties at any level.

This is not the first performance of “We Are the Firewall”. Since the beginning of the year, several million people across Germany have taken to the streets under this slogan, demonstrating the democratic values ​​and exclusion of the AfD at all political levels. “We will not allow right-wing extremists from parliament to poison our unity by trying to divide us with hate, incitement and fake news. On our platform we represent a wide social and cultural spectrum. “In this way we show that solidarity is the right answer to sharing,” the organizers make clear.

Fridays For Future also wants to participate in the protests. “That’s why we take to the streets on Sunday in Dresden, Leipzig and Erfurt together with a broad alliance to send a clear signal,” says Janina Lohmann from Fridays for Future Dresden. In addition to protecting democracy, the activists are concerned to emphasize the urgency of climate protection measures. “There is a lot at stake in these state elections: If one of the democratic parties fails to enter parliament and the AfD gains veto power in the state parliaments, the impact on our democracy would be fatal,” says Lohmann. “In terms of climate policy, there is not only a risk of non-stop, but even reverse,” continued the activist.
