All holiday flights canceled, minister wants a declaration that travel is necessary

Travel organizations are canceling all holiday flights for the time being. TUI no longer flies to both sun and snow destinations. Corendon will also stop flying holidays. This is the result of the negative travel advice due to corona. And Infrastructure Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen is introducing additional measures.

The last tourist flights were to the Canary Islands and the Antilles. For Corendon that was only Bonaire. Until now, these destinations were still flown because they were code yellow, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now also set these places to code orange. With code yellow it is still allowed to go on holiday, but with code orange all unnecessary trips are discouraged.

In recent days there were still long queues in the departure halls at Schiphol. That was a thorn in the side of Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen. She said she was “disappointed and angry” about it.

Traveler statement

In a letter to the Lower House, the minister writes that she finds the crowds at Schiphol unacceptable and that she has agreed additional measures with the aviation sector to discourage unnecessary travel. “In any case, I am investigating whether it is possible to introduce a statement in which travelers indicate whether it concerns a necessary trip,” writes the minister. She will inform the House about it early next year.

Schiphol director Dick Benschop shouted in News hour also to only fly if there is no other option. He advises against people to go on holiday by plane now. The airport is taking measures to manage the crowds and to ensure that people can be there safely.

The travel organizations are forced to cancel all holiday trips this winter. Anyone who is already at their destination can finish their holiday, TUI says. Holidaymakers are simply picked up.
