“Politics is coming back” is the central slogan of the Panhellenic Conference of the New Left, which began with the speech of the president of the parliamentary group, Alexis Haritsis.
“Time stopped in Tempe. 57 dead. A crime,” said Mr. Haritsis at the beginning and added: “A crime that revealed that behind the triumphalisms about the country’s development miracle, there is a harsh, unrelenting reality. The reality of a country with broken infrastructure, a country that suffers from the absence of a plan, from the waste of public resources, from bribery and opacity, a country that does not care about its people,” said Mr. Haritsis.
Alongside this reality, there is also “our own Greece, the Greece that does not forget. The society that organizes and resists. The people who oppose the cynicism of everyday life and ‘nothing changes’ to solidarity, assertion, the struggle for a better life. For the life we deserve! In front of us, however, we have another Greece. The Greece of a government that, one year after the Tempe tragedy, insults the memory of the dead, the pain of the families, the citizens’ demand for justice. A government that covers up, that covers up the scene of the crime, that interferes with the independence of institutions so that justice is not served. A government that does not care about its condemnation in the European Parliament and instead of apologizing for the violation of the rule of law, discovers subversive and dark conspiracies.”
According to sources of the New Left “after more than 120 open meetings and events throughout the country, the New Left closes its first cycle of formation, acquires a central organizational structure and organizations throughout the country. In this context, the central body of the New Left will be established on Sunday, while the political declaration will also be approved.”
The completion of the work of the conference will mark the beginning of the pre-election battle and the formation of the European ballot. The same sources note that “the New Left arrives at its national conference with new faces and representation from many social and political areas”.
The work of the conference began with the formation of the honorary presidium and with greetings from the former speaker of the Parliament, Nikos Voutsis, and the Palestinian Ambassador.
