All-day schools: Message – “Digitization of schools more important than ever”

The Federal Government takes a position on the national education report “Education in Germany 2020”, which this time has “Education in a digitized world” as its main focus.

On Wednesday, the Federal Cabinet adopted the Federal Government’s position on the eighth national education report (“Education in Germany 2020”). The independent report appears every two years and describes the overall development of the German education system. The focus of the current report is “Education in a digitized world”. Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek explains:

“Education is of central importance for the future of a society. The high value of schools has certainly become clearer to many in the pandemic. The importance of digital learning in particular became clear once again in this corona pandemic. The main topic of this year’s education report ‘digitization’ couldn’t be more topical. This report also reminds us that we are not yet where we would like to be when it comes to digital learning. The need for action has now become particularly clear in all areas of education during the pandemic. But at the same time a lot is in motion: the federal government is now making 6.5 billion euros available for the School DigitalPact. Never before has there been a comparable federal investment in school equipment.

The task now is to implement a satisfactory digital infrastructure in schools in the next few weeks and months with the resources available. The federal government has already launched two special programs for the DigitalPact School: to provide schoolchildren with mobile devices who cannot access the appropriate devices at home, and to enable administrators to support the infrastructure. The program for the provision of laptops for teachers is making good progress in talks with the Länder. However, it should not be forgotten that the creation of a good digital infrastructure is an important prerequisite for digital learning – but digital learning can only be successful if the right didactic concepts are in place. In the next few months I want to discuss in detail what good learning will look like in the future. “

Background:

The report “Education in Germany” appears every two years and gives a differentiated overview of the entire education system in the Federal Republic of Germany. He reports on the development in all stages of the educational process from early education through school, university and vocational education to the advanced training of adults. The reports each have a changing focus topic. The education report is produced by an independent scientific group of authors. The funding is provided jointly by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK).

The eighth national education report was published on June 23, 2020. This time the focus chapter is dedicated to the topic of “Education in a digitized world”.
