28 are the producers of “Bulgarian yogurt“, 25 are of “Bulgarian white brine cheese“, but for now not all of them are entered in the register
The protected designation of origin gives a market and competitive advantage to cheese and yogurt produced from 100% Bulgarian raw materials. This was said by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Georgi Takhov at the opening of the Fifth National Assembly “The Milky Way of Bulgaria through the Ages” in Lukovit. This year, the highlight of the event are dairy products with the Protected Designation of Origin “Bulgarian yogurt” and “Bulgarian white brine cheese”.
In connection with the entry of these traditional Bulgarian products in the European Register of Protected Appellations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications, Minister Takhov stated that this happened thanks to the joint work of the branch organizations and the MFA team.
“In the last few months, we have done a lot to give priority to the Protected Designation of Origin, because the Bulgarian producer must be institutionally protected,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Food and recalled the priority of PDO products in public procurement.
“Livestock breeding is a sensitive business that is affected by external factors,” commented Minister Takhov and thanked the farmers who take care of livelihood and food security.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food added that clean food is something that Bulgarians increasingly want and look for, and the assembly in Lukovit has already become a sustainable tradition and gives the participants and guests the opportunity to try quality Bulgarian food.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, so far with regard to the Protected Designation of Origin “Bulgarian Sour milk” there are a total of 28 producers, of which 14 are entered in the register, 8 are in the registration procedure, and 6 are in the process of certification and are expected to submit documents for registration. Regarding Protected designation of origin There are a total of 25 “Bulgarian white brine cheese” producers, of which 13 are registered, another 7 are in the process of registration, and five are in the process of certification and are expected to submit documents.
Minister Georgi Tahov examined the displayed dairy products of producers who are registered under PDO or are candidates for such registration. The mayor of Lukovit, Ivan Gruncharov, presented Minister Takhov with a replica of an object from the Thracian treasure discovered near Lukovit, dated to the 4th century BC.
The fifth national assembly “The Milky Way of Bulgaria through the ages” in Lukovit takes place from October 18 to 20 and is organized by the Association “Bulgarian Traditional Dairy Products”, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Municipality of Lukovit.
The regional governor Dora Stoyanova, representatives of the State Fund “Agriculture”, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the state company “LB Bulgaricum”, scientific circles, trade unions and local government also took part in the event.
