HOW THEY ARRIVE: After the shock caused by the Pumas victory in New Zealand, a week later they arrive at the fortress of Kiwi rugby, Eden Park, to play the rematch. The 38-30 victory of the Argentine team left a lot to be desired: four tries in their favour, 38 points and a performance that demonstrated the attitude with which they faced the match. High-level collective and individual performances and a positive attitude to go after the match. The Maori lost on a pitch where they have not had the results lately. The errors in management and decisions, unusual for them, were also exposed by the great work of those led by Felipe Contepomi. A notable victory, the third in a history, which feeds the hope, especially for the way it was achieved.
WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?: Eden Park is the home of New Zealand rugby, it represents a real fortress for them. They have not lost there since 1994, when they were beaten by France. 50 games have passed since that last defeat, and from then on the All Blacks have not been defeated in that stadium again. Argentina has a huge challenge after winning for the second time on Kiwi soil. The first is to be able to be competitive again, a situation that they have never been able to sustain after a great victory. What’s more, every time they beat the Oceanians, in the following match they felt the rigor of the three-time world champions. Consistency, persisting over time with the proposal and being able to show the same attitude as in Wellington will be the challenges that Los Pumas will seek in Auckland. New Zealand is going for revenge, with all its arguments it will seek to change its image, and thus, in some way overcome the criticism they received from all media for their poor performance.
THE BACKGROUND: With a history that saw them winless for 44 years, Los Pumas made history again. They beat the All Blacks for the second time away from home, just two years apart. With the first success in Parramatta by 25-15 that was achieved during the pandemic, in 2020, the albiceleste team beat the black team three times in the last four years. The other Argentine victories were: 25 to 18 in Christchurch, in 2022 and the recent 38 to 30 in Wellington. Another fact worth highlighting was the 38 goals they scored in the last game. These were the most in the history of the All Blacks in their country. They surpassed the 36 scored by South Africa, in 2018 and the 35 they achieved in 1997; Australia’s 33 in 2013 and the Springboks’ and Ireland’s 32 in 2009 and 2022 respectively.
