As of today, all Arriva trains in Groningen and Friesland will run on vegetable Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a residual product of frying fat, for example. For this, the trains in the provinces used diesel.

In the past two years, the carrier tested the fuel in two new trains: “The test showed that everything with HVO works in the same way as with diesel,” a spokesperson told ANP news agency. But compared to diesel, HVO releases 90 percent less CO2 emissions.

Hydrogen and battery train

At the end of last year, the carrier and the province of Groningen signed a tender for four hydrogen trains. The trains must run on the Delfzijl-Groningen-Veendam route from 2027. Trials are also underway in the region with battery trains.
