All About Lunar Phases and Supermoons: A 2024 Supermoon Schedule Included

Jakarta

The source of moonlight visible from Earth is a reflection of sunlight, so its shape as seen from Earth will change. These changes in the shape of the moon as seen from Earth are called lunar phases.

Of the phases of the moon, there are four main phases, namely the new moon phase, the early half full moon, the full moon phase, and the late half full moon phase. The period of revolution of the moon in its orbital plane is calculated from the position of the new moon phase to the initial half-full moon phase to the full moon phase to the final half-full moon phase and back to the new moon phase.

This period is called the synodic period. The time taken for the moon’s revolution in its orbital plane is approximately 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes 03 seconds.

At certain times the Moon will be closest to Earth. This is called perigee.

Meanwhile, at other times the Moon will be in the farthest position from Earth, which is called apogee. Perigee and apogee are caused by the moon’s orbit around the Earth being an ellipse.

The period of revolution of the moon in its orbital plane, if calculated from the position of perige to apoge and then back to perige, is called the anomalistic period. On average, this period takes 27 days 13 hours 18 minutes 33 seconds.

It can be seen that the lunar travel time to complete these two periods is different. One day the Moon will be in the new moon phase and its position at apogee, for example.

Supermoon schedule 2024

Quoted from a release on the official BMKG website, in 2024 the Moon at perigee or apogee will not always be in the same phase. For example, on March 10 2024 at 14.04 WIB the Moon will be at its closest position to Earth in 2024.

The distance at that time was 356,894 kilometers and 1 hour 55 minutes. Then the Moon will be in the new moon phase.

The same thing also applies when the Moon is in the apogee phase. On February 25 2024 at 22.00 WIB, the Moon will be at apoge at a distance of 406,311 kilometers. However, 26 hours 30 minutes earlier the Moon was in the full phase.

During the new moon phase, the size of the moon is not observed unless it is a solar eclipse. The perigee full moon or what is more familiar as a supermoon will occur on:

  • August 21, 2024
  • 18 September 2024
  • October 17, 2024
  • 14 November 2024.
  • Meanwhile the apoge full moon or better known as the minimoon will occur on:

  • February 25, 2024
  • March 23, 2024.
