Alitalia launches Covid-free flights on its Rome-New York route

Alitalia will now require that all passengers boarding the Rome-New York route be tested for coronavirus before boarding the plane, the Italian airline announced on Friday.

Last week, Italy indicated its willingness to launch the first “Covid-free” air corridor between Europe and the United States for passengers whose test for Covid-19 is negative, thus removing the quarantine requirement for new arrivals.

Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), manager of Rome Fiumicino airport, had announced an agreement between the companies Alitalia and Delta Air Lines for special flights between certain North American cities and the Italian capital from December.

Passengers will need to provide proof that they have been tested within 48 hours of departure, or undergo a rapid antigen test at the airport.

As for those traveling to Rome from New York, they will be required to undergo another screening test upon arrival. If the negativity is confirmed, they will be spared the Italian quarantine rules.

This initiative follows the launch in September of Covid-free domestic flights between Rome and the Italian financial capital Milan.

The US airline Delta adopted similar rules on its Atlanta-Rome route last week.
