The new Alitalia ready for take-off. After weeks of discussions, the four ministers (of the Economy, Transport, Economic Development and Labor) reached an agreement on the names of the board of directors and the signing of the decree of constitution of the newco with public traction and with a budget of 3 billion euros. Over three months after the appointment, via social media, of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the top management will thus become effective: Fabio Maria Lazzerini CEO, Francesco Caio president.

I nomi
The board will be made up of nine people in all – the CEO, the president and seven directors -, a couple more than had been imagined at the beginning of September and which according to a ministerial source was necessary to satisfy all political souls. The board of directors should be composed of Alessandra Fratini (lawyer specializing in EU law), Cristina Girelli (formerly in Alitalia now in Air Italy, the former Meridiana which ended in liquidation last February), Simonetta Giordani (formerly Autostrade), Lelio Fornabaio (accountant), Silvio Martuccelli (lawyer and professor of civil law at Luiss), Frances Ouseley (former number one of easyJet Italy) and Angelo Piazza (former magistrate of the Tar). The names, confirmed at Courier service from two ministerial sources, they were anticipated by Everyday occurrence.

The advances
During the recording of the Porta a Porta episode on Thursday, the Minister of Economy Roberto Gualtieri said: I think the decree will be released today. A few hours earlier it was the CEO Fabio Maria Lazzerini who said now we are: We just wait for them to give us the keys and then we leave, he added during the EY Capri Digital Summit A New Brave World in Rome. And again: I believe that the first planes of the newco will fly next year. Statements arrived the day after the appeal – during a hearing in the Chamber – by Commissioner Giuseppe Leogrande who had invited us to act quickly with the start of the newco.

The managers
The signing of the constitution decree will thus give Lazzerini and Caio the possibility to proceed with the choice of the first line of executives as the head of operations, network, finance, alliances, legal, industrial relations and personnel. With all of them, the top management will have to design the new company, taking into consideration the watchful eye of the European Commission which will ask for maximum discontinuity between the newco and the company in extraordinary administration whose revenues in the first nine months of this year due to the coronavirus plummeted by 1.7 billion euros.
