Alimerka acquires the first electric truck in Spain | BE Gijón | Today for Today Gijón

Alimerka continues with its firm commitment to contribute to a more responsible and sustainable environment. Hence, the Asturian supermarket chain has bought the first electric truck in the retail sector in Spain. It is a MAN eTGM model with autonomy for 180 kilometers that allows a full working day. The vehicle recharging time ranges from an hour to an hour and a half, using fast-charging chargers located in the Alimerka Logistics Center. Part of the vehicle’s recharging energy comes from the photovoltaic installation that Alimerka has in the Lugo de Llanera Logistics Center, more than 7,500 photovoltaic panels, the largest installation in Asturias, which is a 100% sustainable process.

This new vehicle is optimal for transport on the urban circuit at peak times and peak traffic as well as at night unloading hours, since it exponentially minimizes noise pollution. This initiative makes the logistics of Alimerka be more sustainable, with zero emissions, and also more efficient since it allows goods to be supplied in urban circuits outside of peak hours. Will do the last mile routes in urban areas of Oviedo, Gijón Y Aviles; in a year it will roll about 60,000 kilometers, which will mean a reduction in CO2 emissions to the atmosphere of up to 60 tons compared to a conventional diesel vehicle.

Manuel Enterría, logistics director of Alimerka, explains that “this fully electric delivery truck also contributes significantly to an efficient delivery model, in the same way that it is a very safe and comfortable vehicle to drive.”

Alimerka adds to its plan for a more sustainable logistics this cutting-edge project in the national territory by the hand of MAN, aware of the environmental impact that road transport has both on short and long-haul routes. The Asturian distribution chain already started in 2012 the reconversion of its entire fleet From urban delivery vans to 100% electric vehicles, in 2019 the conversion of all its trucks to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) vehicles was completed, which represents a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and emits half noise than a conventional Diesel vehicle.

In recent years, Alimerka has received several awards and recognitions, such as the ‘Lean & Green Star’ awarded by AECOC for the reduction of CO2 emissions in the distribution chain as well as the recognition of ECODES, of 101 Companies for the Climate, where consumption has been recognized of 100% green energy. Alimerka thus continues with its firm commitment to the environment, within its sustainability plan.
