Alice Toniolli Falls and Hits Her Head in Race. Hospitalized in Serious Condition

Alice Toniollia 19-year-old cyclist from Trentino from the Top Girls Fassa Bortolo team, is hospitalized in serious conditions in Treviso after violently hitting her head against a wall during the women’s race of the ‘Circuito dell’Assunta’ held yesterday in Ceneda di Vittorio Veneto, in the province of Treviso.

Transferred from Conegliano to Trento

Originally from Mezzocorona, Toniolli – who has worn the Italian national team several times and was European champion last year at the European Road Championships in the junior relay – died shortly after halfway through the race, for reasons currently being investigated, while she was in the middle of the group he lost control of the bikeshe lost her balance and crashed into a low wall. Alice, who has been a professional since this year, was initially transported by helicopter to the hospital in Conegliano but, following the worsening of her conditions, she was transferred to Ca’ Foncello in Treviso where she is hospitalized in the intensive care unit. According to what was learned from the hospital’s health management, the cyclist suffered multiple trauma to the head, some fractures to the ribs and a leg, and a slight cervical contusion. Her life is not in danger, the prognosis remains reserved.

“The accident happened on a straight, flat stretch, where the athletes were traveling at 50 km per hour. When she was picking up her water bottle, she must have touched the wheel of the athlete in front and she went flying to the left,” Giacomo Salvador, president of Cicloturistica and organizer of the race, told Adnkronos. “Last night and this morning I called Rigato, a technician for Fassa Bortolo. Luckily, last night has passed, Alice is still in intensive care and for the moment nothing else is known. I have been organizing the ‘Circuito dell’Assuntà’ for 52 years, including three for women, and I have never seen an accident like this. Luckily, we had an exceptional doctor on site who provided the first, essential care.”
