In ‘Rich, Street Poor’, Alice and Kevin trade their lives with Angelique and son Kayro for a week. Even though Alice and Kevin are doing very well financially, Alice has also seen different times, when she even lived on the street.
Alice and her husband Kevin live in a penthouse in Rijswijk and enjoy their life immensely. Although the two are now doing very well, Alice’s life has not always been a bed of roses. She comes from a violent past, where she was removed from her home in her youth. She ends up in foster homes, but that doesn’t always go well. “I’ve also slept on the street before.”
Alice and Kevin swap their lives for a week with Angelique and her twelve-year-old son Kayro. After Angelique’s ex-husband stopped paying the bills and mortgage, she ended up in debt. As a result, she has to survive on an amount of 60 euros every week. “It’s just hard.”
Alice knows better than anyone what it’s like to be poor and together with Kevin they allow someone else to enjoy it for a week. With a weekly budget of 1,500 euros, Angelique and Kayro can do whatever they want all week. “It’s a nice feeling that he can now get the things he wants,” Angelique says about her son.
When Alice and Kevin first arrive at Angelique’s house, they are shocked by what they see. There are pieces missing from the floor and on the first floor the family lives on a concrete floor. “I feel like a spoiled brat now. I find it really intense,” Alice says emotionally. It affects her the most when she enters Kayro’s room. “I just give him a floor and a nice room.”
On the other hand, Angelique and Kayro in Rijswijk cannot believe their luck. They finally have money for shopping and Angelique is happy that she can give her son what he wants. “It gives me a happy feeling to see my child so happy. He is completely beaming.”
In the meantime, Alice and Kevin also want to do something for their exchange family and they enlist help from family to provide a floor on the first floor of Angelique’s house. In addition, they went out with the remaining weekly budget to get as many ‘cosy’ things as possible for the house.
The week flies by and when Angelique and Kayro return to their house they don’t know what they see. There is a lamp, there is a floor on the first floor and there are all kinds of games in Kayro’s room. They are very happy with what Alice and Kevin have done for them.
And then after a few weeks the two families meet for the first time. “Thank you for letting us stay in your apartment,” Angelique says to Alice and Kevin. To end the adventure well, Alice and Kevin have arranged a cinema voucher for Angelique and her son, so that the two of them can go out again.
