Chinese mapping platforms from Alibaba and Baidu have removed the name of Israel from their maps. Users of social networks drew attention to this, writes The Wall Street Journal.
The maps of Chinese services show the borders of the country and Palestinian territories, as well as the names of major cities. Next to Israel, the names of neighboring countries are visible – Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.
It is not entirely clear when exactly map services hid the name of Israel. Chinese Internet users have been discussing this since the beginning of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, WSJ points out.
Representatives from Alibaba and Baidu did not comment on this.
After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, writes Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the Chinese authorities did not condemn the massacre carried out by terrorists, but condemned “actions that harm civilians.” Later, Chinese authorities said that Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip “went beyond self-defense.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry responded that it was “deeply disappointed” by China’s statements.
At the end of October, China and Russia vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution on the situation in the Middle East proposed by the United States. The Russian draft resolution was also not adopted.
